Yuki Omura

A Confucian monk from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. A writer of military chronicles. A member of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Otogishu. His pen names were Baian and Sochusai. He was from Miki, Harima Province. He was a master of Zen, skilled in waka and renga, and well versed in apocrypha. He served as a priest at Nakajima Tenmangu Shrine in Osaka, while also serving as a close attendant to Hideyoshi. He was loved for his literary talent and learning, and wrote military chronicles and new Noh poems about the various events that occurred during the process of unifying the country. He had connections with Yamashina Kitsune, Fujiwara Seika, Satomura Joha, and others, and accompanied Hideyoshi to Nagoya during the Bunroku War, but after returning to Kyoto, he was often ill and his activities slowed down. His major works include "Tenshoki," which depicts Hideyoshi's life, as well as "Harima Besshoki," "Shibata Kassenki," "Kanpaku Ninkanki," "Kishu Gohakkoki," "Shikoku Gohakkoki and Hokkoku Godozakiki," "Kyushu Godozakiki," "Juraku Gyokoki," and "Odawara Gojin." His lyrics for new Noh plays include "Koyasan Sankei."

安土桃山時代の儒僧。軍記作者。豊臣秀吉(とよとみひでよし)の御伽衆(おとぎしゅう)。号は梅庵(ばいあん)、また藻虫斎(そうちゅうさい)。播磨国(はりまのくに)三木の出身。禅をよくし和歌・連歌に巧みで外典(げてん)に通じ、大坂中島天満宮の社僧を務めながら秀吉に近侍、その文才と学殖を愛され、天下統合過程の諸事件を軍記や新作能(しんさくのう)詞章につくった。山科言経(やましなときつね)、藤原惺窩(ふじわらせいか)、里村紹巴(さとむらじょうは)らと交流があり、文禄の役には名護屋(なごや)まで供をしたが、帰洛後は病気がちで活動は鈍った。主要な作品は秀吉の生涯を描いた『天正記(てんしょうき)』で、『播磨別所記』『柴田合戦記』『関白任官記』『紀州御発向記(ごはっこうき)』『四国御発向并北国御動座記(ごどうざき)』『九州御動座記』『聚楽行幸記(じゅらくぎょうこうき)』『小田原御陣』が現存、新作能の詞章に『高野参詣』などがある。
