In the crustacean group, shrimp and crabs, there are several pairs of gills that differentiate from the base of appendages such as maxillae and ampullates or from the body wall, and are located in a gill chamber formed by part of the carapace. The shape of the gill lobes that make up each gill varies depending on the species; in shrimp, the gill lobes that branch out like trees are arranged in two rows, in crayfish, many thread-like gill lobes protrude around the gill axis, and in crabs, the gill lobes are arranged in two rows.
