Fort Smith

The county seat of Sebastian County, in the northwestern corner of the state of Arkansas, USA. Population 73,000 (1990). Located at the foot of the Ozark Plateau, it is the state's second largest city. It is a trading center for the surrounding agricultural regions producing corn, cotton, and livestock, as well as an industrial city producing woodwork, furniture, and paper products made from timber from the Ozark Plateau, as well as glass, fiber, and blocks. A settlement was established as a military post in 1817, and became a town in 1842. In 1849, it became an important trading center for people heading to California during the Gold Rush, and was a stage for the activities of outlaws and sheriffs.

アメリカ合衆国アーカンソー州北西端，セバスチャン郡の郡都。人口7万3000(1990)。オザーク台地のふもとに位置し，州第2の都市。トウモロコシ，綿花，家畜を産する周辺の農業地帯の取引中心地であるとともに，オザーク台地の木材を利用した木工品，家具および紙製品，そしてガラス，繊維，ブロックなどを産する工業都市でもある。1817年軍の駐屯地として集落が建設され，42年に町となった。49年にはゴールドラッシュのカリフォルニアへ向かう人々の重要な取引地となり，無法者や保安官の活躍の舞台となった。
