The county seat of Sebastian County, in the northwestern corner of the state of Arkansas, USA. Population 73,000 (1990). Located at the foot of the Ozark Plateau, it is the state's second largest city. It is a trading center for the surrounding agricultural regions producing corn, cotton, and livestock, as well as an industrial city producing woodwork, furniture, and paper products made from timber from the Ozark Plateau, as well as glass, fiber, and blocks. A settlement was established as a military post in 1817, and became a town in 1842. In 1849, it became an important trading center for people heading to California during the Gold Rush, and was a stage for the activities of outlaws and sheriffs.
