On the other hand, the so-called wealthy farmers' associations were formed with the support of local influential people such as wealthy farmers and merchants, and often had a relatively open composition, including the children of wealthy farmers, teachers, journalists, and other intellectuals. Well-known examples include Sekiyosha in Ishikawa, Fukushima Prefecture (founded in 1875, with Kono Hironaka, Yoshida Koichi and others, and about 200 members), Sanshisha in Miharu (founded in 1878, with Kono Hironaka, Tamono Hideaki and others, and about 100 members; along with Sekiyosha, it played a pioneering role in the East Japan Civil Rights Movement), Yukansha in Haramachida, Minamitama County (founded in 1881, with Ishizaka Masatsugu and others, and 150-300 members), Gakugei Kodankai in Itsukaichi, Nishitama County (before 1880, centered around Uchiyama Yasubei and Fukasawa Gonpachi and others, known as the background to the so-called Itsukaichi Constitution Draft), Shokosha in Matsumoto (founded in 1880, with Matsuzawa Kyusaku, Kamijo Keiji, Ichikawa Ryozo and others, and over 1,200 members), and Jigo Gakusha and Jigosha in Sakai County, Fukui Prefecture (founded in 1879, centered around Sugita Sadakazu, and 115 members). These wealthy farmers' associations played a leading role in uniting the local rural civil rights movement against the samurai civil rights movement and in changing the nature of the entire movement.
