Born: July 29, 1905, Jonkeping, Uppsala
Died: September 18, 1961. Swedish politician near Endora, Zambia. Educated at the universities of Uppsala and Stockholm, he served as Secretary of State for the Treasury from 1936 to 1945. During this period, he also served as Governor of the Swedish National Bank. In 1946, he transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he became Secretary of State in 1947. He was an expert on economic diplomacy. He was appointed Swedish representative to the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) in 1948, Deputy Head of the Swedish Mission to the United Nations in 1951, and Head of the Mission in 1952. In April 1953, he became the second Secretary-General of the United Nations. He devoted himself to reforming the UN Secretariat and boosting morale. During the Suez Crisis of 1956-57, he made an effort to establish the UN Emergency Force, and was reappointed Secretary-General in September 1957. During the Congo Crisis of 1960, he worked hard to settle the civil war despite the division of opinion among UN member states, but he died in an airplane crash in the mountains of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) during this period. He was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961.

スウェーデンの政治家。ウプサラ,ストックホルム両大学に学び,1936~45年財務省事務次官。この間,スウェーデン国立銀行総裁もつとめた。 46年外務省に移り,47年外務次官となり,経済外交の専門家として活躍。 48年ヨーロッパ経済協力機構 OEECのスウェーデン代表,51年スウェーデンの国連代表団副団長,52年団長に任命された。 53年4月第2代国連事務総長に就任。国連事務局の改革,士気の高揚に専念した。 56~57年のスエズ紛争に際し国連緊急軍の創設に努力,57年9月事務総長再任。 60年のコンゴ紛争では,国連加盟国間の意見の分裂に苦悩しながらも内戦処理に尽力,その最中,北ローデシア (現ザンビア) の山林で飛行機事故により死亡した。 61年死後ノーベル平和賞が贈られた。
