…In 1830, he met P.F. von Siebold in Amsterdam and became his assistant, and later taught Japanese studies as a professor at Leiden University. He cooperated with Siebold in the editing and publication of his great work Japan (1832-51), and also worked hard to publish Dutch translations of Japanese books. His work Japansche Spraakleer (Japanese Grammar) (1867) in particular should be remembered as a groundbreaking work in this field. This book was published in English (reprinted in 1876) at the same time as the Dutch version, and in German in 1877. …
