A coefficient devised by Charles Thornthwaite to express the degree of aridity of a climate. A term corresponding to the wetness coefficient. Considering three factors, potential evapotranspiration (the combined amount of evaporation from the earth's surface and transpira- tion from plants), a certain amount of water stored in the soil, and precipitation, if the annual total of the water deficit is d and the annual total of potential evapotranspiration is n , the dryness coefficient Id is Id = 100 d / n .
