Canada Balsam

A natural resin. A pale yellow to yellow-green transparent viscous liquid that exudes from the bark of balsam fir (Pinaceae). It has a fragrant scent, and gradually forms a transparent coating in the air. Its refractive index is close to that of glass, so it is used as a cement for lenses in optical instruments. In addition, because of its fragrant scent, it is used as a balm and ointment to treat skin diseases. It is mainly produced in Quebec, Canada. → Balsam → Related article Nicol prism

天然樹脂の一つ。バルサムモミ（マツ科）の樹皮より浸出する淡黄〜黄緑色の透明な粘稠(ねんちゅう)性液体。芳香があり，空気中で徐々に透明な塗膜をつくる。屈折率がガラスに近いため光学器械のレンズの接合剤などに使用。また，芳香性のあるところから，香油，香膏として皮膚病の治療にも使われる。主産地はカナダのケベック州。→バルサム
