Mount Goken

This mountain is located in the north-central part of Kagawa Prefecture, on the border between Mure-cho Mure and Aji-cho in the northeast of Takamatsu City. It is located in the center of the peninsula east of Yashima. Its altitude is 375 meters. It is named after the five rock peaks that stand tall at the top. It is also called Yakuriyama because the 85th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage, Yakuri-ji Temple, is located on the mountainside. Two peaks collapsed in heavy rains in 1698 (Genroku 11) and an earthquake in 1706 (Hoei 3), and the mountain is currently somewhat incomplete. The geology, with tuffaceous agglomerates on top of granite, has been differentially eroded to create this unique shape. The mountain range stretching north from Gokenzan is home to high-quality granite quarries. It is called Aji stone and is processed into gravestones and stone lanterns. There are many stone processing companies at the foot of the mountain. There is also a cable car to Yakuriji Temple.

香川県中北部、高松市北東部の牟礼(むれ)町牟礼と庵治(あじ)町の境にある山。屋島の東の半島中央に位置する。標高は375メートル。頂上に五つの岩峰が屹立(きつりつ)しているのでこの名がある。また山腹に四国八十八か所第85番札所八栗寺(やくりじ)があるので八栗山ともよばれる。1698年（元禄11）の豪雨と1706年（宝永3）の地震で二つの峰が崩れ、現在姿はやや不完全である。花崗(かこう)岩の上部に凝灰質集塊岩がのった地質が差別侵食を受けてこの特異な形をつくった。五剣山から北へ連なる山地には良質の花崗岩の丁場がある。庵治石といい、墓石や石灯籠(いしどうろう)に加工される。山麓(さんろく)部には石を加工する業者が軒を連ねる。八栗寺へはケーブルカーもある。
