Located 72 km east of Mérida on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the town is the commercial and transportation hub of the sisal-growing region. It has a population of approximately 8,600. It is historically famous as a sacred place for the Mayan Itza people. Many ruins remain, including the "White Road" (pilgrimage route) that leads to the town from all directions, north, south, east and west, and the tomb of the chieftain. After the conquest, it played a role as a base for the spread of Spanish culture and Christianity. Many historical buildings from the early colonial period, such as a Franciscan church (1553) and a monastery, still convey the atmosphere of those days.
