A town in Kishima County in central Saga Prefecture. The main settlement was a former post town on the Nagasaki route, and the Sasebo Line runs through it. After the Meiji period, it developed as a coal mining town in the Kishima coalfields, but the mines are now closed. The southern half of the town is in the Saga Plains in the Rokkaku River basin, and produces rice. Mandarin oranges and greenhouse horticulture are also practiced. 11.50 km2 . 7,369 people (2010). 佐賀県中部,杵島(きしま)郡の町。主集落は長崎路の旧宿場町で佐世保線が通じる。明治以後杵島炭田の炭鉱町として発展したが現在は閉山。南半は六角川流域の佐賀平野部で米を産する。ミカン栽培,ハウス園芸も行う。11.50km2。7369人(2010)。
