Noh actor. Shite actor of the Konparu school. Second son of Sakurama Banma, one of the three great masters of the Meiji era. Formerly named Kintaro. Born in Tokyo. A master who added a sharp sense to the elegant style of the school, and showed dynamic and sophisticated performances in every piece. His gorgeous chanting with a good bass tone and vivid forms were unparalleled. In 1955 (Showa 30), he performed the greatest secret piece, "Sekidera Komachi." He also showed enthusiasm for new Noh works, performing "Tokimune," "Yoshitsune," and "Oku no Hosomichi" written by Takahama Kyoshi. In 1982, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. Sakurama Ryoma (Kintaro, 1916-91) was his eldest son. His cousin was Sakurama Michio.
