Paez - José Antonio Páez

A military man and politician, originally a rancher from the Llanos region of Venezuela. Born in Acarigua in the central-western part of the country. In the War of Independence in 1810, he sided with Spain, but later switched sides to the Liberation Army. In 1817, he became the liberation leader of the Apure region, joined Bolivar's colonial liberation army, and led the country to victory in the Battle of Carabobo in 1821. In 1830, following the breakup of the Republic of Gran Colombia, he was appointed the first president of the separated and independent Venezuela. In 1939, he took power again and strengthened his leader-like character. To check the opposition of Guzmán Blanco and others, he supported Monagas, the leader of the east, as the next president, but Monagas allied with Guzmán Blanco after taking office, so Paez was defeated and fled the country. He tried to regain power several times afterwards, but failed, and died in exile in New York.

ベネズエラ、リャノス（草原）地方の牧童出身の軍人、政治家。同国中西部アカリグアに生まれる。1810年の独立戦争にはスペイン側についたが、のちに解放軍側に移った。17年アプレ地方の解放指導者となり、ボリーバルの植民地解放軍に合流して、21年カラボボの戦いを勝利に導いた。30年、大コロンビア共和国の分裂に伴い、分離・独立したベネズエラの初代大統領に任命された。39年ふたたび政権を握り頭領的性格を強めた。グスマン・ブランコらの反対勢力を牽制(けんせい)するため、東部の頭領モナガスを次期大統領に推したが、モナガスは就任後にグスマン・ブランコと結んだため、パエスは敗れ国外に脱出した。その後数回政権奪回を企てたが失敗し亡命先のニューヨークで没した。
