Volcanic neck

A type of volcanic landform. The magma that filled the vent of a volcano later cooled and solidified, forming an igneous rock body that remains after the surrounding area has been removed by weathering and erosion, protruding in an almost cylindrical shape. Also called a plug. It is made of lava, pyroclastic material, or both. The slab-shaped one is a dike.

火山地形の一つ。火山の火道を満たしたマグマがのちに冷え固まり、それによってできた火成岩体が、周囲を風化・侵食で除去されたのちも残存し、ほぼ円柱状に突出しているものである。岩栓ともいう。溶岩、火山砕屑(さいせつ)物、またはその両者からなる。板状のものが岩脈である。
