Cow Princess - Goou no Hime

Japanese: 牛王姫 - ごおうのひめ

Title of an old Joruri piece. 6 sections. A version of the Hachimonjiya version published in 1673 (Enpo 1) still exists. It is believed to have been performed during the Keicho era (1596-1615). Kamada Masakiyo's sister, Ushiohime, was captured by the Taira clan after being betrayed by her aunt, a nun, and was tortured and interrogated about the whereabouts of Ushiwakamaru, but instead of confessing, she bit off her tongue and took her own life. Since Masakiyo's sister also appears in the Kōwaka dance piece Kamada and the Otogi-zōshi Joruri Monogatari, it is believed that there may have been some kind of relationship between the two in legend.

古浄瑠璃の曲名。6段。1673年(延宝1)刊の八文字屋板が現存。慶長年間(1596‐1615)には演じられていたことが推定されている。鎌田政清の妹牛王姫は，伯母の尼公の裏切りによって平家方にとらえられ拷問を受け，牛若丸の行方を追及されるが，白状をせず舌をくい切って自ら果てる。幸若舞曲《鎌田》，御伽草子《浄瑠璃物語》にも政清の妹が登場するところから，これらの間には伝承上，何らかの関係があったのではないかとされている。
