… Early cards were hand-drawn, but in the first half of the 15th century they were printed using woodblock printing. They were produced in large quantities in Germany, so England and other countries responded by temporarily banning their imports. In 1615, England imposed an import tariff, and in 1628 imposed a card tax on domestically produced cards as well, with other countries following suit. After 1765, tax payment certificates began to be printed on the ace of spades. …
