Hindu and Buddhist art that spread in Cambodia from the 7th to 13th centuries, when the Khmer Empire was established. It can be divided into early and late periods, with the construction of Angkor Thom at the end of the 9th century as the dividing line. The early period was when Indian art was being adapted to the Khmer Empire, and is characterized by high tower (prasat) architecture with a single hall on a square plan and giant round sculptures. The later period was dominated by the architecture of large, vast and complex temples, typified by Angkor Wat, and is characterized by a geometrically balanced layout. The reliefs on the corridor walls of Angkor Wat and Bayon depict Indian historical poetry and mythology, as well as the battles and lives of the Khmer people.
