Born: November 15, 1891 in New York
[Died] July 26, 1986. New York American politician. Graduated from Yale University. Son of American railroad magnate E. Harriman. Initially entered the business world as an employee of Harriman Trading Company, and in 1932 became president of Union Pacific Railroad. He was particularly active in the transportation industry, and in 1937 became chairman of the Business Committee of the Department of Commerce. During World War II, he negotiated with Britain and the Soviet Union as a special representative of the President. In 1948, he was a traveling ambassador for the implementation of the Marshall Plan, and in 1951 he was Director of the Mutual Security Council, and in 1955 he became Governor of New York State. He visited the Soviet Union from May to June 1959. He played a major role as Under Secretary of State in the Geneva Accords in 1962, and represented the United States in the negotiations for the Partial Nuclear Weapons Test Ban Treaty, which he provisionally signed in 1963. In 1968, he served as the chief US representative at the Paris Peace Conference in Vietnam. In 1974, he became chairman of the Democratic Party's Special Advisory Committee on Foreign Policy.

Died September 9, 1909. American businessman who lived near Turner. As a railroad financier, he was active in reorganizing and integrating railroads in the west. Starting with the Illinois Central Railroad, he acquired, reorganized, and controlled railroads such as the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific. He fought with J. Hill, chairman of the Great Northern Railroad, over control of the Burlington Railroad, which linked the Union Pacific with Chicago, and was responsible for the economic depression of 1901. He held important posts in diplomacy and national politics from the 1930s, and was the father of WA Harriman, who served as a representative in the Vietnam Peace Talks (1968).

アメリカの実業家。鉄道金融資本家として西部の鉄道の再組織と統合に活動。イリノイ・セントラル鉄道から始り,ユニオン・パシフィック,サザン・パシフィックなどの鉄道を買収,再組織,支配した。ユニオン・パシフィックとシカゴを結ぶバーリントン鉄道の支配権をめぐってグレート・ノーザン鉄道会長 J.ヒルと争い,1901年の経済不況の原因をつくった。 30年代から外交,国政の重要ポストを歴任し,ベトナム和平交渉 (1968) の代表をつとめた W.A.ハリマンの父。
