…The term is derived from ad catacumbas (meaning "by the depression"), which originally referred to the catacombs of St. Sebastian, a Roman burial site on the outskirts of Rome. In the first half of the 2nd century, the ancient Roman burial style shifted from cremation to burial in the ground. In addition to above-ground cemeteries, there were hypogeums, which were small underground burial chambers, and catacomb-style burial chambers, which were extensive underground burial chambers connected by corridors. Christians also followed this tradition, using and developing underground burial chambers from the second half of the 2nd century to around the 7th century. …
