It is a resort city on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula in southern Ukraine. It is also a port city facing the Black Sea. It has a population of 82,000 (2001). It is 86 km south of Simferopol in the center of the Crimean Peninsula, and is connected by buses, trolley buses, and helicopter shuttles. With the Crimean Mountains on its north side, it has a mild climate with average temperatures of about 24°C in July and about 4°C in January, and an average annual rainfall of about 700 mm. The beach season is from early June to early October, but it is known as a winter resort because many people come from northern Russia in the winter. From the southern foot of the Crimean Mountains to the coast, hotels, pensions, resorts, sanatoriums, etc. are scattered among the sparse forests and vineyards. In addition to the tourism industry, wine (the brand name "Massandra" is well known overseas) and brandy brewing, souvenir manufacturing, and food processing are also carried out. It also houses an agricultural technical school, a medical school, a brewing research station, an ecological medicine institute, a film studio and Chekhov's memorial house. The Yalta Conference in February 1945 was held in Livadiya Palace, overlooking the sea.
