...A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family that grows on pastures and urban wastelands (illustration). It is an introduced plant native to Europe, and its introduction into Japan was noticed in the early 1930s. It is particularly common in Hokkaido. Its English names are cat's-ear, gosmore, and California dandelion. The pinnate leaves grow at the base and form a rosette, and when cut, a white milky liquid comes out. In spring, it produces a flower stalk about 50 cm long and produces bright yellow flower heads. The flower heads consist of only ray flowers and are 3 to 4 cm in diameter. At first glance, it resembles the dandelion genus, but it differs in that the leaves are densely covered with yellowish-brown stiff hairs and the flower stalks are branched and have black scales. ...
