Kabuki dance. Nagauta. Lyrics by Sakurada Jisuke III, music by Kineya Shojiro III, choreography by Fujima Kanjuro I. This is one of the seven transformation dances "Seven Flowers in a Row" that was first performed by Bando Mitsugoro III at the Ichimuraza Theater in Edo in March 1811 (Bunka 8). Based on the Noh play "Matsukaze", it depicts the female diver Matsukaze wearing the eboshi hat and hunting costume that was a keepsake of her lover Ariwara no Yukihira, as she remembers Yukihira. The play ends with a dance that imitates Noh, including a dance of drawing tide, a story describing Suma Bay, a tirade to Yukihira, and a flashy parasol prop using a three-covered umbrella. The first performance featured a dialogue with Tokiwazu, but now it is performed only in Nagauta. Usually, the performer appears as a young woman in a red kimono with a bunkin shimada and a gold eboshi hat, but she may also dance in the guise of a female diver. Following the example of the Mitsugoro revival, there are also performances in which the female diver is transformed into a fox and appears from a turtle on the runway.
