After working as a substitute teacher in her hometown of Shimane Prefecture, she moved to Tokyo and married Toshi Orimoto of the University of Tokyo Newcomers Association, taking the surname Orimoto. Influenced by her husband, she joined the women's movement and was active in the National Women's Alliance and the Prostitute-Free Alliance. In 1929, she opened a women's work school for female workers at the Toyo Muslin Kameido factory in Kameido, and supported the Toyo Muslin strike the following year. She was later imprisoned for her activities with the Communist Youth League. While in prison, she gradually expanded her interest to research women's history. She divorced in 1934.
