...There are many wild species in North America, but they were not cultivated in the past. At the beginning of the 17th century, European grapes were brought by whites and cultivation began, and they became popular in California, where the weather conditions were favorable. In the eastern states, the weather conditions are not favorable and there are severe pests and diseases, so the American grape V. labrusca L. (English name fox grape) which is resistant to pests was cultivated, and improved varieties of high quality European grapes and American grapes were also created by crossbreeding. In the subtropical and tropical regions of the southeastern United States, V. rotundifolia Michx., also known as muscadine, was cultivated and improved. ...
