Soprano (English spelling) soprano Italian

A musical term with four different uses:

(1) Refers to the highest voice in a polyphonic piece. In the history of Western music, this term first came into use in the second half of the 16th century, when Gioseffe Zarlino (1517-90), author of Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558), also used the term soprano in this sense. In the 15th and 16th centuries, terms such as cantus and discantus (both Latin) were also used to refer to the highest voice. Meanwhile, in the 17th century, the term treble (English) was used synonymously.

(2) The highest vocal range for female voices. The range is about _B3 - _B5 , but _F6 may be required for solo singing. Sopranos who appear in operas are classified into various vocal types and singing styles, including the soprano dramatico, which requires powerful and dramatic expression, the soprano lirico, which has a lyrical and sweet character, and the coloratura, which has a ball-rolling voice and sings the highest vocal range (all in Italian). Among them, the lirico is divided into the lirico leggiero, which has a lighter vocal quality, and the lirico spinto, which is heavier. In addition to female voices, male voices and boys before puberty are also called sopranos, such as male soprano and boy soprano.

(3) Among the several clefs seen in the 17th and 18th centuries, the one used for the soprano part is called the soprano clef. The C clef defines the first line of the staff as _C4 , and minimizes the number of ledger lines added to the staff for the high-pitched soprano part.

(4) Among the several sizes of the same instrument, the word soprano is added to the smaller one, that is, the one that plays in the high range (e.g. soprano recorder, soprano saxophone). For instruments even smaller than the soprano, the word sopranino (Italian) is used.

音楽用語。次の4種の用法がある。

(1)多声楽曲における最上声部をさす。西洋音楽史において、この語が定着して用いられるようになったのは16世紀後半で、『和声論』Le istitutioni harmoniche（1558）を著したツァルリーノ（ザルリーノ）Gioseffe Zarlino（1517―90）もこの意味でソプラノの語を用いている。15～16世紀では、最上声部をさす語としてカントゥスcantusやディスカントゥスdiscantus（いずれもラテン語）などの語もみられる。一方、17世紀にはトレブルtreble（英語）の語が同義で使用されている。

(2)女声のなかでもっとも高い声域をさす。その音域はおよそB₃―B₅であるが、独唱の場合にはF₆を要求されることもある。オペラに登場するソプラノはその声質や歌唱法によって細かく分類され、おもなものに、力強く劇的な表現を必要とするソプラノ・ドラマティコsoprano dramatico、叙情的で甘い性格をもつソプラノ・リリコsoprano lirico、玉を転がすような声質でもっとも高い声域を歌うコロラトゥーラcoloratura（いずれもイタリア語）などがある。そのなかでとくにリリコは、声質のより軽いリリコ・レッジェーロlirico leggieroと、より重いリリコ・スピントlirico spintoとに区別される。なお、女声に限らず、同じ音域をもつ男声や声変わり前の男児も、メール・ソプラノmale sopranoやボーイ・ソプラノboy sopranoのようにソプラノとよばれる。

(3)17～18世紀にみられる数種の音部記号のなかで、ソプラノ声部用に使用されるものをソプラノ記号という。ハ音記号により、五線譜の第一線をC₄音と定めたもので、高音域のソプラノ声部にとって、五線譜に加えられる加線が最小限度に抑えられる。

(4)数種の大きさがある同一楽器のなかで小さいもの、つまり高音域を奏するものにソプラノの語が付加される（例、ソプラノ・リコーダー、ソプラノ・サクソフォーン）。なお、ソプラノよりさらに小さい楽器には、ソプラニーノsopranino（イタリア語）があてられる。
