Torishima

Japanese: 鳥島 - とりしま

An uninhabited volcanic island at the southern end of the Izu Islands in Tokyo. Also known as Izu Torishima. The island is named after the albatrosses, an internationally protected bird and a national special natural monument, that live there. It is an active volcano located on the southern edge of the caldera of an undersea volcano to the north, with a diameter of 2.7 km and a nearly circular shape. It has erupted repeatedly since recorded history, and in a major eruption in 1902, all 125 islanders were killed. In 1939, the central crater cone, Iouzan (394m), was formed. A meteorological observation station was established in 1947, but a swarm of earthquakes predicted an eruption, so it was closed in 1965 and has been uninhabited ever since. In 1965, the entire island was designated a natural monument. Area 4.79 ^km2 .

東京都，伊豆諸島南端にある無人の火山島。別称伊豆鳥島。国際保護鳥で国の特別天然記念物のアホウドリが数多く生息し，島名の由来となった。直径 2.7kmのほぼ円形をなし，北方の海底火山のカルデラ南縁部に位置する活火山。有史以来噴火を繰り返し，1902年の大噴火では 125人の島民全員が死亡した。1939年には中央火口丘の硫黄山（394m）が形成された。1947年気象観測所が設置されたが，群発地震により噴火が予測され，1965年に閉鎖，以来無人島となった。1965年全域が天然記念物に指定。面積 4.79km²。
