An uninhabited volcanic island at the southern end of the Izu Islands in Tokyo. Also known as Izu Torishima. The island is named after the albatrosses, an internationally protected bird and a national special natural monument, that live there. It is an active volcano located on the southern edge of the caldera of an undersea volcano to the north, with a diameter of 2.7 km and a nearly circular shape. It has erupted repeatedly since recorded history, and in a major eruption in 1902, all 125 islanders were killed. In 1939, the central crater cone, Iouzan (394m), was formed. A meteorological observation station was established in 1947, but a swarm of earthquakes predicted an eruption, so it was closed in 1965 and has been uninhabited ever since. In 1965, the entire island was designated a natural monument. Area 4.79 km2 .TorishimaPlease see the "Iwo Torishima" page.
