Optimal control is one of the methods for designing automatic control systems, and the maximum principle is the theorem that forms the basis of optimal control, established in the late 1950s by Soviet mathematician Pontryagin and others. This principle introduced a new perspective to control system design methods and became the driving force behind the development of modern control theory in the 1960s. Suppose the dynamics of the _controlled object is expressed by the differential equation dx / dt = f ( x , u , t ), where x = ₍ x1 , ..., xn ) is the state vector, _and u = ₍ u1 , ..., ur ) is the input vector.

自動制御系の設計法の一つに最適制御があるが，最大原理は最適制御の基礎となる定理で，1950年代の終りにソ連の数学者ポントリャーギンらによって確立された。この原理は制御系の設計法に新しい視点を導入し，60年代の現代制御理論の発展の原動力となった。　制御対象のダイナミクスが微分方程式　dx/dt＝f(x，u，t)で表されるとする。x＝(x₁，……，x_n)は状態ベクトル，u＝(u₁，……，u_r)は入力ベクトルである。
