...Iceland is a society that was created by immigrants from Scandinavia, mainly from western Norway, from the end of the 9th century. They organized a religious community around the temple of a powerful farmer called a hof, and such powerful people were called goði (priests). These powerful people gathered together to organize local assemblies called heraðsthing (meaning "assembly of the herað (region)"). Then, around 930, when the undeveloped areas were basically wiped out by population growth, they gathered together in the island-wide assembly called Althing, and organized the whole island into a system of assemblies at various levels. ...
