As mentioned above, the most important forms of vocal music are theatrical music such as opera and oratorio. When these forms were first established (such as Monteverdi's opera and Giacomo Carissimi's oratorio (1605-74)), the structure of scenes was very fluid, but from the end of the 17th century to the 18th century, a form that regularly alternated aria and recitative gradually became dominant (Allessandro Stradella (1644-82) and A. Scarlatti). In the field of opera, in the 18th century, comic operas with comic elements emerged in each country (such as opera buffa in Italy, opéra comique in France, Singspiel in Germany, and ballad opera in England) in contrast to the high-class opera seria with tragic themes.

　声楽曲の形式の中でとくに重要なのは，前言したようにオペラやオラトリオなどの劇音楽の形式である。これらの形式は成立当初は(オペラのモンテベルディ，オラトリオのカリッシミGiacomo Carissimi(1605‐74)ら)，場面の構成がきわめて流動的であったが，17世紀末から18世紀にかけてはアリアとレチタティーボを規則的に交替させる形式がしだいに支配的となった(ストラデラAllessandro Stradella(1644‐82)，A.スカルラッティ)。オペラの分野では，18世紀に入ると，悲劇的な題材をもつ格調の高いオペラ･セーリアに対して，笑劇的な要素を含む喜歌劇がそれぞれの国に興った(イタリアのオペラ･ブッファ，フランスのオペラ･コミック，ドイツのジングシュピール，イギリスのバラッド･オペラなど)。…
