The name of the entire peninsula was Iberia, which was of Greek origin, and Hispania, which has its origin in the Phoenician i-sephan-im, meaning "Rabbit Coast" or "Rabbit Island." The Romans also inherited the name Hispania, and the current country name also originates from this.
