Hispania

…Spain is the English name, and in Spanish it is called España. The name of the entire peninsula was Iberia, which was of Greek origin, and Hispania, which has its origin in the Phoenician i-sephan-im, meaning "Rabbit Coast" or "Rabbit Island." The Romans also inherited the name Hispania, and the current country name also originates from this. Historically, the country was divided into 15 regions and administratively into 51 provinces, but was reorganized into 17 regions by the new constitution of 1978.
