A port and commercial city located at the head of Ormoc Bay on the west coast of Leyte Island in the Philippines. Population 142,000 (1994). Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was merely one port town in Western Leyte, with the Ormoc Plains as its hinterland, but with the start of operations at the Ormoc Sugar Factory in 1929, it grew into the largest city on the island with a population of 80,000 by 1939. It has stagnated somewhat since the war, but its population is still on par with that of the provincial capital, Tacloban.
