A bird of the order Accipitridae (Accipitridae). Widely distributed in Eurasia and North America, it prefers forest edges and shallow woods. Those in the north migrate short distances. It lives alone in winter, but both males and females return to the area of the previous year's nest in spring to mate again. In Japan, it breeds from central Honshu northward. It was a common breeding species in the UK, but hunters became hostile towards it because it captures game birds and animals, and its population has declined dramatically. Total length 48-62 cm. Females are slightly larger. Its plumage is dark brown on the back and white on the underside with fine brown stripes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
