1791‐1841 The second emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam. Reigned 1820-41. Fourth son of Emperor Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen Dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 1820, and promoted civil servants in exchange for the meritorious officials who had been the founding fathers of the Gia Long era, and attempted to introduce a centralized system modeled on the Qing Dynasty. In the local administrative system, he abolished Beicheng Town in the north and Giading Town in the south, which had previously been semi-independently ruled by powerful warriors, and made them directly governed provinces and prefectures. In the central government system, he strengthened the emperor's authority by establishing a cabinet and a provincial control bureaucracy, while also working to develop a bureaucratic force by changing the parish stipend system to a salary system and improving the imperial examination system.
