It is also called a wheel compass. When a gyro, which has three degrees of freedom, is rotated at high speed, it continues to point in a fixed direction, but if the Earth's gravity is applied to only one axis (the horizontal axis) of such a top, the rotation of the top will cause the axis to point in the direction of the meridian due to the influence of the Earth's rotation.
