The trabeculae transmit the vibrations of the eardrum caused by sound waves to the perilymphatic fluid of the inner ear, and have basically the same positional relationship and function in reptiles, which evolved from amphibians, and birds, which evolved from reptiles (however, in lizards, a new element called the external trabeculae is added to the outside of the original trabeculae, which are inscribed in the eardrum. Also, snakes have trabeculae, but no eardrum or tympanic cavity.…
