Vasil'evskii, Ostrov (English spelling)

...After that, pontoon bridges and pontoon bridges were built, but the current permanent bridge (today's Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge) was built in 1850. The city was originally built on the right bank of the Neva River, with the Peter and Paul Fortress at its center, according to the urban plan of the Swiss-Italian architect Domenico Trezini (known as Trezzini in Italy, around 1670-1734). After the capital was moved from Moscow to this area in 1712, large-scale buildings were built one after another on Vasilievsky Island further downstream, mainly according to plans by the French architect Alexandre Jean-Baptiste Leblond (1679-1719). Representative examples include the 12 Collegia (government buildings) (the current building of St. Petersburg University) and the Kunstkamera (art exhibition hall).
