The ancient Roman goddess of the cycle of the year. Anna is the feminine form of the common noun annus, and perenna means "eternity." Her festival was held in the forest at the first milestone of the Via Flaminia on March 15 (the first full moon day of the lunar new year). On this day, people were free to do as they pleased, and people would raise cups of wine together and pray for happiness in the coming year. The poet Ovid tells two stories about the goddess in his Calendar. One identifies the goddess with Anna, the sister of Queen Dido of Carthage. After Dido's death, Anna fled to Italy and was treated well by Aeneas, but was disliked by his wife and became a nymph of the river god Numicius.
