Southern ungulates - Nantalei
The Notoungulata is a group of extinct ungulates that thrived in South America during the Oligocene and Miocene periods of the Tertiary Period. It is known that predecessors of this species also existed in Asia and North America in the early Tertiary Period, but they later evolved independently in isolation in South America. The name is derived from the Greek word notos, which means southern wind or southern region, and the Latin ungula, which means one with hooves. They had a distinctive ear bone structure, and ranged in size from mouse-sized to elephant-sized, but the shape of their molars is similar to that of mice.
