Oshio Rebellion

Japanese: 大塩の乱 - おおしおのらん
Oshio Rebellion
A rebellion started by Oshio Heihachiro and others in Osaka in 1837. Oshio rose up with his disciples and wealthy farmers from nearby farming villages to help the poor. They set fire to the town, attacked Senba, destroyed the storehouses of wealthy merchants such as the Konoike family, and gave money and rice to the poor, but the rebellion was put down in a day by the military forces of the Osaka castle lord and neighboring feudal domains, and Oshio committed suicide. As Oshio was a former and respected yoriki (police officer), the impact of this incident was great, and peasant uprisings calling themselves the "Oshio Party" continued.
