In the Western flora, it flourished in the Carboniferous period, but in the Cathaysian flora of East Asia, it flourished in the Permian period and became more differentiated, splitting into four genera: Sphenophyllum, which has circular leaves with straight veins ; Parasphenophyllum , which has outward-curving veins; Trizygia , which has three pairs of leaves with straight veins; and Paratrizygia , which has outward-curving veins.
