A school that aims to provide music education and training. There are various types of schools, including national, public, and private, and education is usually divided into all or part of the courses of keyboard instruments, wind, string, and percussion instruments, Japanese musical instruments, theory, composition, musicology, etc.

The words conservatory and conservatoire, which are used in Western languages ​​to refer to music schools and conservatories, were originally used to refer to charitable institutions that housed orphans, but in Italy in particular, these words later came to mean music schools, as musical education was provided to orphans with musical talent. The oldest such musical education institution is Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice (founded in 1262). Many Italian musicians in the 17th and 18th centuries were teachers at such institutions.

Today's music schools were founded after the French Revolution in various regions to provide musical education for citizens and to foster military music. However, military music gradually lost its role. The Paris Conservatory, founded in 1795 based on a singing school established in 1784, is the oldest of modern music schools. In the UK, the Royal Academy of Music in London is the oldest (established in 1822), and in Germany, the Berlin Higher School of Music (1850) is the most important music school today, including its history. Other major music schools that are famous worldwide include the Vienna Conservatory, the Mozarteum Conservatory of Salzburg (Austria), the Verdi Conservatory of Milan, the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome (Italy), the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Belgium), the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow (Russian Federation), the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and the New England School of Music in Boston (USA). In Japan, the first music college was the Tokyo Music School (established in 1887, the predecessor to the current Faculty of Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts), which was based on the Music Investigation Office established within the Ministry of Education in 1879 (Meiji 12), and today there are music colleges all over the country. In the United States, many universities have music faculties that provide practical training in addition to conservatories.

音楽の教育・訓練を目ざす学校。国立、公立、私立などさまざまな形態があり、教育は通常鍵盤(けんばん)楽器、管・弦・打楽器、邦楽器、理論、作曲、音楽学などの科のすべてないし一部分のコースに分かれて行なわれる。

　欧米語で音楽学校、音楽院をさすコンサーベトリー、コンセルバトアールなどの語は、元来、孤児を収容する慈善施設に対して用いられていたが、とくにイタリアでは音楽の才能をもつ孤児に音楽教育を行ったため、のちにこのことばが音楽学校を意味するようになった。この種の音楽教育施設の最古のものは、ベネチアのオスペダーレ・ディ・メンディカンティ（1262設立）である。17、18世紀のイタリアの音楽家のなかには、この種の施設の教師であった者も少なくない。

　今日の音楽学校の基礎は、フランス革命後に、市民の音楽教育と軍楽の育成を兼ねて各地に設立された学校である。しかし、しだいに軍楽の占める位置は後退した。1784年設立の歌唱学校をもとに1795年に設立されたパリ音楽院は、近代の音楽学校中最古の歴史を誇る。イギリスではロンドンにある王立音楽院が最古（1822設立）で、ドイツではベルリン高等音楽学校（1850）が、その歴史も含め今日もっとも重要な音楽学校となっている。そのほか世界的に有名な主要音楽学校には、ウィーン音楽院、ザルツブルク・モーツァルテウム音楽院（オーストリア）、ミラノ・ベルディ音楽院、ローマ・サンタ・チェチーリア音楽院（イタリア）、ブリュッセル王立音楽院（ベルギー）、モスクワ・チャイコフスキー音楽院（ロシア連邦）、ニューヨークのジュリアード音楽学校、ボストンのニュー・イングランド音楽学校（アメリカ）などがある。日本では、1879年（明治12）文部省内に設置された音楽取調掛(とりしらべがかり)を土台にした東京音楽学校（1887設立。現在の東京芸術大学音楽学部の前身）が最初のもので、今日では各地に音楽大学がある。アメリカでは、音楽院のほかに実技教育を行う音楽学部をもつ総合大学も多い。
