Flight recorder - flight recorder

A flight recorder installed on aircraft to help determine the cause of aircraft accidents. Aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 5,700 kg or more are required to be equipped with this device, and must be kept in operation from the start of takeoff until the aircraft has landed and finished its runway.

The first flight recorders used analog FDRs (flight data recorders), which recorded five pieces of data: altitude, airspeed, vertical acceleration, heading, and elapsed time. Recent aircraft, including the Boeing 747, are equipped with digital flight data recorders (DFDRs), which record data digitally on magnetic tape, and in addition to the five pieces of data from the FDR, record more than 20 types of data, such as the aircraft's attitude, the movement of the control surfaces, the engine operating status, and the time of contact with air traffic control, in endless format for 25 hours. The device is housed in a heat- and shock-resistant capsule and is attached to the tail cone of the aircraft's tail to prevent damage in the event of an accident. Data is read by computer processing, and analysis is performed using printouts of the data. Flight recorder records are to be kept for at least 60 days.

航空機事故の原因解明のために航空機に搭載されている飛行記録装置。最大離陸重量が5700キログラム以上の航空機はこの装置を搭載することが義務づけられ、離陸を開始するときから着陸して滑走を終えるまでの間、常時作動させておかなければならない。

　フライトレコーダーは、最初はアナログ方式のFDR（flight data recorder）が用いられ、高度、対気速度、垂直加速度、機首方位、経過時間の五つのデータが記録されていた。ボーイング747型機をはじめ最近の航空機にはデジタル方式で磁気テープに記録されるDFDR（digital flight data recorder）が搭載されており、FDRの五つのデータのほかに、飛行機の姿勢、操縦翼面の動き、エンジンの運転状態、航空交通管制機関と連絡した時刻など20種以上のデータがエンドレス形式で25時間分記録されている。装置は、航空機が事故のとき破損しないように、耐熱・耐衝撃構造のカプセルに収められ、機体尾部のテールコーンの部分に取り付けられている。データの読み取りはコンピュータ処理によって行い、プリントアウトしたデータを使用して解析を行っている。フライトレコーダーの記録は少なくとも60日間保存することになっている。
