1732‐90 British politician. Son of the 1st Earl of Guilford, he inherited the earldom two years before his death, but is generally referred to as Lord North. Member of the House of Commons since 1754. Under the reign of George III, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1767-70) and Prime Minister (1770-82), and furthermore formed the Fox-North coalition government as Home Secretary (1783). He lacked sufficient political leadership to deal with domestic and international difficulties, such as the outbreak of the American War of Independence and the intensification of radical movements both inside and outside Parliament.
