British politician. Son of the 1st Earl of Guilford, he inherited the earldom two years before his death, but is generally referred to as Lord North. Member of the House of Commons since 1754. Under the reign of George III, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1767-70) and Prime Minister (1770-82), and furthermore formed the Fox-North coalition government as Home Secretary (1783). He lacked sufficient political leadership to deal with domestic and international difficulties, such as the outbreak of the American War of Independence and the intensification of radical movements both inside and outside Parliament. イギリスの政治家。初代ギルフォード伯爵の息子で，死去の2年前に伯爵位を相続したが，一般にノース卿と呼ばれる。1754年以降下院議員。ジョージ3世の治下で蔵相(1767‐70)，首相(1770‐82)を歴任し，さらに内相としてフォックス=ノース連立内閣を組織(1783)。アメリカ独立戦争の勃発や議会内外の急進主義運動の激化など，内外の難局に対処する十分な政治指導力に欠けていた。【松浦高嶺】
