Tiger shark (English name) Galeocerdo cuvier

Japanese: イタチザメ（英語表記）Galeocerdo cuvier

A marine fish of the Carcharhinidae family in the order Carcharhinidae. The name "tiger shark" is a direct translation of the genus name, Galeocerdo , and is called "tiger shark" in English because the horizontal stripes on its body resemble those of a tiger, but it is a different species from the catshark of the family Scyllidae. It is found in many tropical and temperate coastal areas around the world, and in Japan it is found from central Honshu to Okinawa. It has a short snout and long wrinkles at the edge of its mouth. When it is small, the brown horizontal stripes are prominent, but as it grows, they become less noticeable.

メジロザメ目メジロザメ科の海産魚。イタチザメの名は属名のGaleocerdoをそのまま訳したもので，英名では体の横縞模様がトラに似ているのでtiger shark(トラザメ)というが，トラザメ科のトラザメとは別種である。全世界の熱帯から温帯にかけての沿岸域に多く，日本では本州中部から沖縄にかけて分布する。吻（ふん）が短く，口の端に長いしわがあることが特徴。小型のときは褐色の横縞が顕著であるが，成長すると不明りょうになる。
