A Thai kingdom that flourished from around the 11th century with its capital at Chiang Saen in the northernmost part of Thailand. There are many unknowns about its history. Chiang Saen was an important city in the northernmost part of Thailand until King Mang Rai of the Lanna Thai Kingdom moved the capital to Chiang Mai in 1296. Several temples and pagodas remain at the site of the capital, and Buddhist statues in the Chiang Saen style have been excavated and discovered. The Buddha statues are characterized by a lotus bud-shaped jewel on top of the head, a thick, swollen chest like a lion's chest, a mudra to subdue demons, and a cross-legged position.
