Bon Odori is a traditional dance handed down in Okubo, the former village of Yagi, Mihara-cho, Mihara-gun, Hyogo Prefecture. The leader sings to the rhythm of a large drum and clappers. There are men's dances and songs danced in pairs by men and women, and for men's dances such as "Yodo no Kuruma" and "Sankaimatsu," young men dance in yukata robes. For Kumi Odori, men imagine themselves as Takebe Genzo and Yohei, and women as Chiyo and Kasane, holding items such as swords, sutra desks, sickles and sedge hats, and dance together to the accompaniment of love songs such as "Terakoya" and "Dobashi," which are parodies of Gidayu and Kabuki. It is a structured dance that links the items to the play. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
