1668‐1751 French jurist and politician. He was appointed prosecutor of the Paris Parlement (1691) from a distinguished legal family, and served as Chief Prosecutor (1700) and chancelier for many years (1717-50). He was forced into seclusion for a time (1718-20, 1722-27) due to conflicts with John Law and Cardinal Dubois (1656-1723), but his efforts toward legal unification, particularly in drafting royal decrees on gifts (1731) and wills (1735), were important. He was an erudite and eloquent student of Domas and Malebranche. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
