In the Romanesque style of Western Europe, the block capital (cushion capital) was a heavy block capital with a cube at the top and a sphere at the bottom, and the scalloped capital and those with carvings of water plants were developed. In France, allegorical capitals with carvings of figures from the Bible were created, and in Gothic, the simple crocket capital was widely used. From the early modern period onwards, the Greek and Roman capitals were revived, and they were widely used until the early 20th century. …
