A large, beautiful moss belonging to the family Cerataceae. It is also called karakasagoke. It is widely distributed from tropical Asia to Japan, and in Japan it grows in warm regions from central Honshu southward. It forms sparse colonies on moist, humus-rich forest floors. The stems crawl long through the humus, and their tips suddenly rise up and grow to aboveground stems 5-8 cm in height. The leaves at the bottom of the stem are reddish-brown, scaly, and tightly attached to the stem, but the leaves at the tip are large, bright green, and grow outward in a cluster. The Japanese name comes from this unique shape, which resembles an umbrella. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
