A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Also known as Naotsugu or Naoyuki. Commonly known as Danemon. He was a retainer of Kato Yoshiaki and was in charge of the gun unit as a head of the clan. He participated in the Bunroku-Keicho War (1592-1598) as a naval force and was active in capturing enemy ships. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), he left his master and served Kobayakawa Hideaki, Matsudaira Tadayoshi, and Fukushima Masanori, but Yoshiaki's interference was too strong and he was unable to achieve his goals. Finally, to avoid prosecution, he entered Myoshinji Temple in Kyoto and took the name Tetsugyu. In the Winter Siege of Osaka in 1814, he entered the castle and served under Harunaga Ono, and in the Summer Siege of the following year, on April 29th, he fought against the forces of Nagaakira Asano at Kashii, Izumi (Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture) and was killed in battle. His grave is in the small village of Motoyama in the same area. [Yoshihisa Sasa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
